Avoid the Auto Insurance Tactic: ‘Delay, Deny, Defend’

Not all insurance companies are created equal.  This post isn’t meant to point fingers at a particular insurer but the above insurance tactic is well-known for collision repair in the auto body industry and our purpose here is to alert the consumer.   This goal of this documented tactic called “delay, deny, defend” is to minimize the amount they pay for justified  claims for collision repair.

Here is the usual course of this tactic:

1. Delay payment for up to two days. Most insurers are notorious for dragging their feet on claims. This is not a random thing or that they’s too busy to process your request. It simply means their doing “research”. And that “research” is the reason for the second tactic.

2.  Deny your claim. Insurance companies are like any other business. They’re purpose is to turn a profit and some are simply greedy about their bottom-line. As a result you, the insured, bear the brunt of this. Many agents will attempt to deny your claim for various reasons. If you feel you’re being taken advantage of, or are not receiving the proper amount needed to repair your car, you can take the insurer to court. This where they use the next tactic.

3.  Defend their settlement amount. Insurance companies are like any other business. They’re purpose is to turn a profit and some are simply greedy about their bottom-line. As a result you, the insured vehicle owner, bear the brunt of this.  Some unscrupulous agents may take advantage of your emotional state at the time of your accident to try to get you to accept a lower settlement than the actual proper repair cost.   Many people are under duress from the collision itself, worries about roadside assistance along with not being able to drive their own car, not being able to waive your deductible, etc. Insurance companies sometimes use this to their advantage, but don’t be fooled or feel bullied.
