Regular Car Maintenance Just Makes Sense
We hear talk about car maintenance all the time. This is important in all kinds of weather to prevent collisions or breakdowns. Whether you live in the heat of the southwest or the cold of the northeast, it’s critical to take care of certain parts of your vehicle on a regular basis for safety reasons.
Check Wipers and Lights
Having good windshield wipers that are worn and streak your windshield can be a real hazard in rainy or winter weather. Poor visibility is a leading cause of collision. Replace your wiper blades if they show signs or wear. Also, make sure all your lights are working, both interior or exterior. Regarding headlights, having one burned out is cause to get pulled over by police and is a definite traffic hazard. Replace any bulbs both inside or headlights that are dimming, rapidly blinking or not functioning.
Check Brakes and Brake Pads Regularly
This is probably the most important car maintenance as the most important safety feature on your car. You should at least have an annual inspection of your braking system to avoid problems. Every six months is even better. If you hear or feel clicking, squeaky or grinding noises when you apply your brakes, you may have a problem. You may simply need new brake pads or even brake fluid. But make sure you get it checked at the first sign of trouble. Also, if you have a brake light that is illuminated on your dash, get the car looked at as soon as possible.
Make Sure Fluid Levels Are Full
Keeping fluid levels at your vehicles recommended level is also important in severe heat or cold. Obviously, the most important fluid is your engine’s oil which should be changed according to your vehicles oil maintenance schedule. Other fluids to have checked on a regular basis are your transmission fluid, power steering fluid and air conditioning coolant. Also, make sure your windshield washer fluid is filled. Again, visibility is a big safety concern here.
